Wonga Beach to Cairns

Day 49 - Friday 28 June 2013

We woke to the usual 20 to 25 degree forecast with sun for Wonga Beach, and a forecast maximum of 27 degrees for Cairns. Given that we had a relatively short run to Cairns today (only 100 kms) we were not too rushed in packing up for our trip south. We left Wonga Beach at about 9:30 am and visited the dump point at Mossman on our way south.

As Wonga Beach is the most northern point on our itinerary this year it is probably appropriate for an up date. We have now travelled 6,000 kms, 4,600 kms with the van on and 1,400 kms touring with the van off. We have purchased 1,100 litres of diesel at a cost of $1,717, or an average of $1.56, which is cheaper than we paid at Perth in Tasmania. Fuel economy with the van on has ranged between 17.0 l/100k and 26.0 l/100k, but averaging 20.8 l/100k. We have spent 47 nights in caravan parks on the road at a total cost of $1,418, averaging just over $30.00, with the lowest being $25.00 at Thargomindah, and the highest being $37.80 at Shepparton Big4.

The road from Wonga Beach passes through Mossman, before bypassing Port Douglas and continues along the coast to Cairns. The road is generally narrow and winding with a lot of road works to slow us down. However we arrived at Cairns Coconut Holiday Village at about 11:30 pm and booked in for 7 nights. The cost with our Big4 discount was $49.50 per night - so welcome to the Queensland coast. We were allocated site 155 with a slab and did a full set up.
