Coles Bay - Day 1

Sunday 2 February 2014

Today's forecast was for a warm sunny day with a maximum of 27 degrees.

We picked up our van from the storage yard at Cambridge and returned home to start the process of packing up for 2-3 weeks on the road. By 11:00 am we were on our way for the 189 km trip to Coles Bay where we had a 2 day booking at the Iluka Holiday Park. The GPS suggested 2.5 hours and knowing the state of the road it would be at least that. We arrived at Orford a bit over an hour later having negotiated Black Charlies Opening at about 30 kph not helped by a very tight corner at the bottom of the hill, and the very narrow road along the Prosser River - thankfully no trucks on a Sunday. We parked on the Esplanade at Orford while we had lunch at Scorchers - a pizza to share with a cold drink.

We arrived at the Iluka Holiday Park shortly after 3:00 pm and paid for 2 nights. We were allocated Site 102, which along with 103 next door are the largest sites in the park - one of the advantages of being a 5th wheeler. After spending a couple of hours setting up on a very warm afternoon we decided to pay up for another 2 days and stay at Coles Bay for 4 days rather than continue on for 2 days of free camping at the Bay of Fires. One of the disadvantages of Coles Bay is there is only one fuel outlet and they are charging $1.99 a litre for diesel - daylight robbery - it should be about $1.69 a litre, so we will fill up at either Bicheno or Swansea while we are touring around.
