Ross to Hobart

Thursday 20 February 2014

Weather today is still cloudy and windy with a temperature in the low 20s.

We left Ross at about 10:45 am and arrived home at about 12:30 pm, having called at the Montrose Bay dump point to empty our holding tanks and give them a good flush out with the macerator pump. The pump allows us to pump fresh water back into the tanks without removing the pump, them pump it all out again - we repeat the exercise until the water comes out clean. Once home we spent about an hour emptying our food and clothing from the van, before returning the van to storage at the Barilla Caravan Park at Cambridge. We have booked the van in for a service at Kings Caravan Service Centre next week as the caravan brakes are not working as well as they should.

We were away 18 days in total, and covered about 1,800 kms, 935 kms with the van and 1,045 kms without the van. The average daily travel with the van on was about 130 kms, which is considerably less than we do when going north for the winter. We used 344 litres of diesel, and averaged 20.9 litres per 100 kms with the van on, and 14.3 l/100k without the van. Average cost of diesel was $1.66 cpl, with the cheapest being $1.627 cpl at Forth. We stayed in caravan parks for 11 nights at an average daily cost of $33.50, 4 nights at the Myrtle Park Camp Ground at $6 per night and 3 nights free camping at the Forth Sports Ground, an overall average of $22.00 per night.
