Hobart to Devonport

Day 1 - Saturday 28 June 2014

After loading the Navara with the last of the food and clothes we left home at about 12:30 pm and drove to the Barilla Caravan Park at Cambridge where we store our caravan. After hitching up we were on our way by 1:15 pm to Devonport to catch the Spirit of Tasmania. Just before Campbelltown we encountered the first of the rain. We stopped at Zeps Café for a coffee before moving on with the rain becoming more persistent.

As we approached the Deloraine turn-off the fuel warning light came on (15 litres left), so we did a detour into Deloraine to refuel. We eventually arrived at the ferry terminal at 5:20 pm and checked in, before lining up for the security check. The security check was a little more thorough than usual - particularly as regards gas bottles. It is a little known fact (that was not reported in the media) that a couple of months ago a gas bottle exploded on one of the vehicle decks and about 6 cars were damaged.

At about 6:30 pm we were directed onto Garage deck 3 - the main truck deck. We were one of the last caravans to be loaded and the Spirit was on its way by 7:15 pm - 15 minutes early.

It is interesting that you refer to the gas bottles. My brother in law Mike Evans was on that boat trip and his Mercedes Van was damaged by the exploding gas bottle
