Forbes to Coonabarabran

Thursday 26 May 2016

Weather today is wet and windy. The rain started in the middle of the night at Forbes and has continued on and off all day, and it is still raining at Coonabarabran. The current temperature is 10 degrees and it is expected to go down to 5 degrees tonight. As well as the wet and the wind the route from Gilgandra to Coonabarabran was very hilly which will not help the fuel consumption.

The route for today was generally north by north-east for 352 km through Parks, Peak Hill where we stopped for papers, Dubbo where we stopped for fuel, and Gilgandra where we stopped for a sandwich and coffee for lunch. Traffic on the Newell Highway was generally fairly light with more trucks going south than passed us going north. There were also a surprising number of caravans going south to the colder weather.

We arrived at the John Oxley Caravan Park on the northern outskirts of Coonabarabran at 2:15 pm and paid $28.00 for a powered grassy drive-through site which enables us to stay hitched-up. Given the lack of sun for the last few days and the probability of free camping again tomorrow night near Glen Innes we decided a night on the 240 volt power grid was in order. The charger is busy pumping 10 amps into the batteries as I write this.
