With a forecast for a week of warm weather with light winds we decided that it was time for a trip away on our boat Moorina. Moorina is a 40 foot Huon Pine cruising yacht built about 55 years ago. Since we bought a fifth wheel caravan about 5 years ago Moorina has been a bit neglected.

We were all packed up by 10 am and on our way down the River Derwent for the 3 hour trip to Barnes Bay on the northern end of Bruny Island. Barnes Bay is a large bay on the northern end of Bruny Island about 20 nautical miles from Hobart, with a large number of anchorages sheltered from all winds. Moorina has a cruising speed of just over 6 knots at 2,100 rpm.

On the way down the river we passed the luxury yacht Arctic P, owned by James Packer. The vessel was previously an ice-capable ocean going tug converted to a luxury cruiser by Kerry Packer.

We also passed one of Rob Pennicott's cruise boats (really just large rubber ducks) on its way back to Hobart from the Iron Pot.

We anchored for the night in North Simmonds Bay near the small settlement of Barnes Bay.
