Day 5 - Thursday 10 May 2012

Another clear blue sky day with a temperature of 22 degrees. After a walk to the nearby West Central shopping centre for the papers and a coffee we spent the rest of the morning on domestic chores. We spent the afternoon sitting in the sun reading the papers.

That evening we caught the bus (the 220 goes past the front of the caravan park) into the city to meet our girls for dinner. We met up with Kirrily at Campari House in Hardware Lane for a few drinks while we waited for Michelle to arrive. Michelle arrived about 8:00 pm and was in Melbourne for a business meeting the next day. We had some excellent pizzas and too many bottles of red wine as the waiter lost count!

Day 4 - Wednesday 9 May 2012

Another clear, sunny day with temperatures of 14 to 23 Degrees, although still windy. Chris and Nola arrived in the park yesterday with an Isuzu ute towing a Jayco Sterling caravan. We first met Chris and Nola at the Lane Cove Caravan Park in Sydney in April 2009 when we were on our first shake down trip. We met them again in Melbourne later that year when they still had their Toyota Coaster motorhome towing a small car. They are on a shake down trip in the Jayco and are on their way to Jayco at Shepparton, to have some warranty work done on the electric brakes on their van. Chris and Nola are on the road full time although Chris still works from the van. They bought a van with bunks, which they had removed and replaced with a small office. It was good to catch up with them again.

In the afternoon we drove to Northcote to see David's sister Louise. The trip was an easy run of about 30 minutes each way, although having a GPS helps with the navigation.

Day 3 - Tuesday 8 May 2012

Today we did the tourist thing with a drive to the Dandenong Ranges National Park including Ferntree Gully, Belgrave, Emerald, Olinda and Sassafras. It was a cloudless sunny day with the temperature in the low 20's.

The road from Belgrave to Emerald follows the Puffing Billy railway line. We stopped for lunch near a heritage listed Trestle Bridge that was constructed in the 1890s.

At Sassafras we stopped for a coffee before returning to the caravan park.

Day 2 - Monday 7 May 2012

As we were on the truck deck we were one of the first off the ferry at 6:30 am for an easy 30 minute drive to the Ashley Gardens Caravan Park at Braybrook. Reception opened at 8:00 am and we set up on our site straight away as it was vacant. The weather in Melbourne was cloudy, windy and cold.

Apart from a shopping expedition that included Woolworths, Caltex, Bunnings, Autobarn and Bursons Auto Parts we had a quiet relaxing day.

After work Kirrily joined us at the van for dinner and a few drinks.

Day 1 - Sunday 6 May 2012

Hobart to Devonport

After completing all the final checks of the van we hitched up and departed at 12:15 pm. The weather was cool with some sun. We stopped on the way for lunch at the Ross Bakery, and arrived at the Esplanade at East Devonport at about 4:00 pm to wait for the ferry to start boardingat 5:00 pm. Once boarding started we had to go and find the end of the queue as there were a lot of vehicles returning to the Mainland after Agfest. We were finally on the truck deck by 7:00 pm and the ferry departed on time at 7:30 pm, by which time we were having a QLD - it being well past beer o'clock.

The weather forecast for Bass Strait was 20 knot winds with 3 metre swells, which meant a smooth crossing.
