Bairnsdale to Melbourne

22 September 2016

We woke to heavy rain that continued for much of the morning, which meant that we had to pack up in the rain.

The rain slowly cleared as we headed west and had stopped by the time we got to Darnum where we stopped for an early lunch.

After lunch we headed back onto the Princess Highway, now the M! and continued into Melbourne via the Monash Freeway, eventually arriving at the Ashley Gardens Caravan Park about mid afternoon. We checked in for three nights and were allocated site 148, which was further back in the park than normal, as all the drive through sites were taken up by very large show vehicles.

As the park no longer provides storage at a minimal fee on the day of departure we paid an extra $55,80 for a late check-out - School holidays the reason for the exorbitant fee.

Mallacoota to Bairnsdale

Tuesday 20 September 2016

Cloudy again today with more rain forecast for our trip of 230 km to Bairnsdale. While we had the occasional try at a shower the trip was uneventful.

We stopped at Orbost for fuel and a coffee and a muffin to keep us going until we reached Bairnsdale. Just past Orbost the Princess Highway had given way after recent rains and while repairs were being undertaken a short detour had been constructed with traffic lights to control traffic. The cycle on the lights was about 5 minutes so we were not held up for too long.

We had made a reservation at the Bairnsdale Riverside Holiday Park, but could not find it on the GPS. When we eventually arrived at the Park we found that there had been a recent change of name from the Mitchell River Caravan Park. We were given the choice of sites and were soon set up for 2 nights.

As it was David's Birthday today we went for a walk around the Town Centre to check out the 45 eateries listed on Zomato. The list included every take-away in town but there turned out to be a few that showed promise. We settled on the Bistro at the Mitchell River Tavern which was within walking distance from the Caravan Park, and it turned out to be the top choice in town with quite a crowd of diners. We had a very good meal and a drink or two to celebrate.

Narooma to Mallacoota

Sunday 18 September 2016

Grey skies today with rain threatening. An easy trip today of 221 km.

Today we drove south through Bega, and stopped for fuel at Eden, before continuing on to Mallacoota.

The Mallacoota Foreshore Caravan Park is a very large park with jetties and moorings available for hire.

As rain was threatening we decide to remain hitched up for our stay.
